Do any of you have problems with dynamics not playing back correctly? I've got a piece I'm working on where pianos are too loud or fortes are too soft. I don't know how this happens but it seems to happen pretty often. Here's a link to a piece I'm talking about. One thing I've tried to do is put hidden expressions for CC#11 but that doesn't always work. It may play back for a measure then jump back to the wrong value the next. stevewinklermusic.com/music/rondo_orchestrated.mus

I don't need to follow the link because I have those problems all the time. :-) I've filled up the playback versions of my scores with "compensating" dynamic expressions with the key velocity numbers changed. As you've experienced, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I've watched helplessly as the volume slider on my Violin I section drifts down, down, down almost to inaudibility despite a raft of changes both to Human Playback settings and to dynamic expressions designed to keep that from happening. But there's no consistency or permanency to it. I believe Andi @ VSL has said (or it might have been A.S.) that there is some kind of glitchy communication problem between HP and VSL instruments that still hasn't been addressed.
This is most noticeable to me during playback when I see an instance of VI hop all over the matrix for a particular instrument and choose a cell that has nothing to do with the articulation for which the score is asking. Very frustrating when the last measure of a piece has all the strings playing a harmonic and all of them do except the cellos, for no apparent reason, because everything is notated & set up correctly in Finale. And yet the next day the cellos will decide to behave. Then that same evening they'll go back to playing the regular sustain patch instead of the artificial harmonic sustain patch. Why? If you know the answer to THAT, then we can close down this user group. :-)

I sent a message to Robert P. on the MakeMusic forum to ask for his insight. I'll post his reply here.

You have to remember that HP is putting in cc7 or cc11 messages to humanize the playback. If you use the MIDI tool to insert a higher cc11 value at the beginning of the piece, it should help quite a bit.

Bill, can you post an example where you demonstrate this? I assume you create a hidden or not-shown staff expression for this purpose - what value do you use at the beginning of the score?

A hidden staff expression would work too, but I just use the MIDI too: -Select MIDI Tool and double click the staff you want to set -From the MIDI Tool menu, choose Edit Continuous Data.../CC11 -Drag the mouse to select a little bit at the beginning of the first measure -From the MIDI Tool menu, choose Set To, and enter a trial value Attachments:

I did get a reply from Robert P. and he said he thought it was the long-standing chasing problem that was finally fixed in 2012b along with other non-specific VSL-related problems.
I would really love to know what the future of HP is going to be. That is I'd like to know if we'll have more visibility and ability to edit HP parameters.

Any updates on this bug/issue/piece of endless frustration? :-)

MM says that Fin 2014 will be release by the end of the year. But who knows what it will include!

My apologies guys. I have not visited this site in quite a long time. Really any other music sites for some reason.
I haven't pursued this any further really. I did upgrade to 2012c and I suppose playback is a little better. I still get strange dynamic anomalies with CC11 type data and velocities. These problems become very apparent when I export a Finale midi file to Reaper. Editing that though becomes overwhelming and not something I care to focus my time on (it's not composing after all). So I just continue to slog along and hope that something comes out that will accommodate my workflow and allow my focus to be on composing and not midi editing.
Here's hoping Finale 2014 is better!!
