Has anyone noticed the somewhat harsh attack on the sustained patch for solo cello? If so what can you do about it to soften it up a bit. Velocity changes don't seem to make a difference.

Have you tried pushing up the Attack fader slightly in the Advanced tab inside Vienna Instruments for that patch? I've done that on several occasions to mellow out a sharp attack. It's the same concept as working with a synthesizer's attack-decay-sustain-release parameters for the voltage controlled oscillator and/or voltage controlled amplifier.
